Eastern Macedonia, Greece

East Macedonia is the most northern part of Greece and distributes its approximately 650,000 inhabitants to the six regional districts Drama, Evros, Rodopi, Kavala, Thasos and Xanthi. The capital is Komotini.

Like many other parts of mainland Greece, eastern Macedonia is not been overrunned by tourism right now.
Here the visitor experiences an authentic and original Greece:

Even the landscape is pure variety for the visitor:
Imposing mountains with over 2000 meters high peaks, alternate with plains, (pine-) forests, lakes and natural parks. An ideal area for hiking and cycling.
Of course, not to forget: The many beautiful beaches that lie to the south on the Aegean Sea and are belong to the most beautiful beaches in Greece. Here you will find water sports and party atmosphere by the sea. All of course in moderate temperatures and pleasant summer heat.

The favorable climate also has a very positive effect on agriculture: In addition to potatoes and sugar beets, rice, fruit and very good grapes for wine harvesting also. Eastern Macedonia is also known for its tobacco and cotton cultivation.

Many interesting museums, historical sites, traditional architecture (such as the old town of Xanthi) offer plenty of attractions for families and for individual travelers.
You also should visit the port city of Kavala, with more than 70,000 inhabitants and its airport a vibrant - but equally worth discovering - starting point for trips to the entire East Macedonian region.
